Amberswood is a 160 hectare nature reserve at the heart of Greenheart. The area has many different environments to discover, from woodlands to wildflowers meadows, grasslands to wetlands. This unique mix of habitats supports many birds, insects and mammalian species. See our Wildlife page for more details.
Today, over 6km of paths and part of the excellent Greenheart Jubilee Way run through Amberswood, making it is easy to get out and explore the whole area. It is also an excellent site for outdoor exercise such as cycling and running. Wigan Harriers host trail races on the site and a permanent orienteering course has been developed (See our gallery). It is a popular site for dog walkers and horse-riders and for people who just want a relaxed stroll amongst a natural area.
A brand new outdoor classroom has been constructed in one of Amberswood’s many blocks of woodland. This is open for the use of the 3 local primary schools; Ince St. Mary’s CE Primary School, St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School and St Peter’s CE Primary School. Woodland totem sculptures have also been erected near the path entrance to the woodland classroom (See our gallery for the full development of these sculptures).
Many footpaths have been upgraded on the site including the main path around the lake. Further improvement works have taken place through Woodland Improvement Grants which Wigan Council has recieved from the Forestry Commission. Improvements are constantly being made to the site to make it better for the people who use it. Every year we aim to encourage more and more people onto the site through various events. Keep checking out Events page for a month to month breakdown.
